Introduction to the sixties
The 1960’s were a decade of change. Some people describe the sixties as an age of 'reform and revolution'. Some changes like fashion were evident while others were shown in the way they lived. The way a modern family lived had been changed. Fashion becomes shorter, brighter and crazier. Music because louder, eclectic and 'funkier'. Technology such as the cassette, compact disc, hand held calculator, computer mouse, barcode scanner and ATM were invented.
A very significant occurrence in the 1960's was the Freedom rides, which highlighted the discrimination of Aboriginal people, particularly in country towns. Because of the success of the Civil Rights Movement in America, a group of University of Sydney students organised a bus tour of western and coastal New South Wales towns. The students planned to draw attention to the state in which the Aboriginals were treated. Their favours were successful with their mission to draw down the socially discriminatory barriers between Aboriginals and white Australians. This student body was called 'Student Action for Aborigines' (SAFA). This is just one example of the types of revolution that occurred in the sixties.
